World of Mara
During The Age of Gates gateways served as infrastructure for vast empires – allowing impossibly fast transport of resources and knowledge. By the height of the Age, countless gateways were in use connecting virtually every civilized power to every other civilized power in the world. Magical gates ways also connected the world to the inner and outer planes. Some gateways allowed instant travel from one location to another (or to many others). Anyone passing through one side immediately found themselves stepping out of a similar gateway in another place or plane. Most gateways however deposited travelers in a particular spot on one of the planes. Travelers would then navigate towards another particular spot where another gateway would lead them to their final destination elsewhere on the face of Mara. Usually, but not always, a path or road clearly lead travelers on their journey through whichever plane the gateway took them. Most paths were quite safe, others could be quite risky to travel. Depending on the gateway travel time could be cut by 50 to 90%.
The gateways ceased to function at the end of the Age of Gates due to the effects of The Dimming. Many gateways have been destroyed or have crumbled in the centuries since but many more still stand, dormant and forgotten.
